02 Injector Performance Is More Than a Yes-or-No Answer
Common Rail injectors changed more than the way fuel is supplied: they changed how injection is controlled.
From spring-controlled to electronically controlled
In a conventional mechanical injector, fuel pressure overcomes a spring-calibrated opening threshold. Two-stage mechanical injectors introduce a second opening stage.
Common Rail injectors use an electrical actuator. With sufficient rail pressure available, electronic commands can trigger injections at different pressures and with different durations. Multiple injections can occur within an engine cycle.
Why this changes testing
The quantity of fuel delivered depends on the conditions and timing of the injection. Pressure and injection duration influence the outcome together. These events happen so quickly that observing a spray cannot tell you the whole story.
Key point: A more sophisticated injection process demands a more meaningful way to evaluate its performance.
